Transliteration

Yā ayyuhallażīna āmanụ lā yaskhar qaumum ming qaumin ‘asā ay yakụnụ khairam min-hum wa lā nisā`um min nisā`in ‘asā ay yakunna khairam min-hunn, wa lā talmizū anfusakum wa lā tanābazụ bil-alqāb, bi`sa lismul-fusụqu ba’dal-īmān, wa mal lam yatub fa ulā`ika humuẓ-ẓālimụn

English Translation

“O people of faith! Let not one people make fun of another (because) it may be that they (who are made fun of) are better than them (who make fun) and neither can women (who make fun of) other women (because) may be women (who are made fun of) better than women (who make fun). Do not reproach one another and do not call upon one another with bad titles. As bad as a call is a bad (call) (ungodly) after faith. And whoever does not repent, then they are the ones who are zalim.” (Q.S Al Hujurat : 11)

Interpretation

After God explains that believers are brothers, this verse describes the guidance for brotherhood to be maintained. O people of faith! Let not one people, i.e. the men, make fun of the people, that is, another group of men because it may be that those who are made fun of are better than those who make fun, nor can women make fun of other women because it may be that women who are made fun of are better than women who make fun. Do not reproach one another with words, deeds or gestures, and do not call each other with titles that are badly judged by the person you call so as to hurt his heart. As bad as a call is a bad call after faith. Namely, if they are called to believers, they are called ungodly people after they have been called believers. And whoever does not repent, having committed ungodliness, then they are the ones who are deceitful to themselves and because of their deeds God inflicts punishment upon them.
