Dua when it rains is taught directly by the Prophet (PBUH). In the rainy season, almost every day the soil is wet because it has been poured with rainwater. The availability of water is so abundant that no one lacks water. No wonder that rain is the grace of Allah SWT for His servants on earth. The blessings of the rain are many. Water is the source of life.

When it rains sometimes, some people even complain, even though, according to the scholars, when it rains is saa’ah ijabah, or time in kabulnya prayer. Responding to the rain as a good Muslim must do something. Not just shut up. We should do something very important by praying to God.

Hadith About Dua When Its Raining

There is a hadith narrated by Sahl bin Sa’d, he said that the Prophet PBUH said:

وَعَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «ثِنْتَانِ لَا تُرَدَّانِ أَوْ قَلَّمَا تُرَدَّانِ الدُّعَاءُ عِنْدَ النِّدَاءِ وَعِنْدَ الْبَأْسِ حِينَ يُلْحِمُ بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضًا» وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ: «وَتَحْتَ الْمَطَرِ» . رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُدَ وَالدَّارِمِيُّ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَذْكُرْ «وَتَحْت الْمَطَر»

Sahl b. Sa’d reported God’s Messenger as saying, “Two things are not rejected, or are seldom rejected:a supplication when the call to prayer is made, and in stress when people are locked in battle.” A version has “and when rain is falling”. Abu Dawud and Darimi transmitted it, but Darimi did not mention “and when rain is falling”.

So what prayers to read when it rains? Here are 3 prayers you can read:

1. Dua To benefit from the rain

This first dua you must read so that you can get a good benefit from the rain that is falling. It is narrated from Aisyah r.a. that when it rained the Prophet PBUH would say:

Arabic

اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا

Transliteration

“Allahummaj-‘alhu soyyiban naafi’an”

English Translation

“O Allah, make it a beneficial rain”

2. Dua when it rains heavily

Furthermore, the dua that you must read when it rains very heavily and you feel worried about the danger that will be caused by the heavy rain. Imam Al-Bukhari recorded that Anas Ibn Malik r.a. once narrated an event where the Prophet PBUH was delivering the Friday khutbah (sermon) when a man came and said: “O Allah’s Prophet PBUH!  livestock are dying and the roads are cut off; please pray to Allah for rain”. 
So the Prophet s.a.w. raised his hands and prayed: “O Allah! Bless us with rain. O Allah! Bless us with rain. O Allah! Bless us with rain!”. Anas r.a. then mentioned in that very narration that there were no clouds in the sky on that day when a big cloud suddenly appeared heading towards them from behind the Sila’ mountain. It came and rained so much they could hardly reach their homes. It continued raining till the next Friday. 
Anas further said in that narration that the next Friday, a person came during the Friday khutbah and said: “O Allah’s Prophet PBUH! Livestock are dying and the roads are cut off; please pray to Allah to withhold rain”. So the Prophet s.a.w. raised his hands and prayed:

Arabic

اللَّهُمَّ حَوَالَيْنَا وَلاَ عَلَيْنَا

Transliteration

“Allahumma hawalaina wala ‘alaina”

English Translation

“O Allah! (Let it rain) around us and not on us”

3. Dua after the rain stopped

The last prayer you should read after the rain has stopped. 

Arabic

مُطِرْنَا بِفَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَرَحْمَتِهِ

Transliteration

“Muthirna bifadllillaahi wa rohmatihi”

English Translation

“We have received rain from Allah’s bounty and mercy”
