What the Prophet said about eating?
1. Washing hands before eating
عَنْ عَائِشَة رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَنَامَ وَهُوَ جُنُبٌ تَوَضَّأَ وَإِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ أَوْ يَشْرَبَ غَسَلَ يَدَيْهِ ثُمَّ يَأْكُلُ أَوْ يَشْرَبُ
Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, if he wanted to sleep while he was in a state of major ritual impurity, he would perform ablution. If he wanted to eat or drink, he would first wash his hands and then eat or drink. Source: Sunan al-Nasā’ī 258
2. Reciting prayers before eating
Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “When one of you eats a meal, let him begin in the name of Allah. If he forgets to say it in the beginning, let him say: In the name of Allah, in its beginning and its ending.” Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 1858
3. Praying before eating will be forgiven sins
The following hadith the Prophet Muhammad said whoever prays before eating as he prays will be forgiven his sins.
عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ أَكَلَ طَعَامًا فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي هَذَا وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ
Mu’adh ibn Anas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever eats a meal and says, ‘All praise is due to Allah, who fed me this from his provision without any capability or strength on my part,’ his previous minor sins will be forgiven.”Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3458
4. Prophet Muhammad Ate Dates and Cucumbers
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَأْكُلُ الْقِثَّاءَ بِالرُّطَبِ
Abdullah ibn Ja’far reported: I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, eating fresh dates with cucumbers.Source: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2043
5. Do not overeat or be greedy
everything that is excessive is obviously not good and the prophet Muhammad SAW did not like it. Especially when eating, eat accordingly and moderately.
عن جعدة أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَأَى رَجُلا عَظِيمَ الْبَطْنِ فَقَالَ بِإِصْبَعِهِ فِي بَطْنِهِ وَقَالَ لَوْ كَانَ هَذَا فِي غَيْرِ هَذَا لَكَانَ خَيْرًا لَكَ
Ja’dah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saw a man with a large belly. The Prophet pointed to his belly and he said, “If this had been placed elsewhere, it would have been better for you.”Source: al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr 2140
6. Resist saltpeter, and do not overdo it when eating
The following hadith teaches us to be polite when eating, besides this hadith explains whoever eats banya in this world, then he will be the hungryst person in the hereafter.
عَنْ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ قَالَ أَكَلْتُ ثَرِيدَةً مِنْ خُبْزِ بُرٍّ بِلَحْمٍ سَمِينٍ فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَجَعَلْتُ أَتَجَشَّأُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ اكْفُفْ مِنْ جُشَائِكَ فَإِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ فِي الدُّنْيَا شِبَعًا أَكْثَرُهُمْ فِي الآخِرَةِ جُوعًا
Abu Juhayfah reported: I ate a stew of bread and fattened meat. Then, I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and I belched loudly. The Prophet said, “Restrain your belching. Verily, those who ate to their fill the most in this world will be the hungriest in the Hereafter.” Source: al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr 17837
7. Satan eats with him until he mentions Allah
When we eat without mentioning God’s name, satan will accompany our meal.
عَنْ أُمَيَّةَ بْنِ مَخْشِيٍّ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَالِسًا وَرَجُلٌ يَأْكُلُ فَلَمْ يُسَمِّ حَتَّى لَمْ يَبْقَ مِنْ طَعَامِهِ إِلَّا لُقْمَةٌ فَلَمَّا رَفَعَهَا إِلَى فِيهِ قَالَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ فَضَحِكَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ قَالَ مَا زَالَ الشَّيْطَانُ يَأْكُلُ مَعَهُ فَلَمَّا ذَكَرَ اسْمَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ اسْتَقَاءَ مَا فِي بَطْنِهِ
Umayyah ibn Makshi reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was sitting and a man was eating food, but he did not mention the name of Allah until nothing remained but a morsel. When the man raised it to his mouth, he said, “In the name of Allah, beginning and ending.” The Prophet laughed, and then he said, “Satan continued to eat with him, but when he mentioned the name of Allah Almighty, he vomited what was in his stomach.”Source: Sunan Abī Dāwūd 3768
8. If he mentioned Allah, it would be enough
Aisha reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was eating with six of his companions when a bedouin came and ate all of the food in two bites. The Prophet said, “If he had mentioned the name of Allah, it would have been enough for all of you.”Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 1858
9. When one forgets to mention Allah before a meal
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ طَعَامًا فَلْيَقُلْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ فَإِنْ نَسِيَ فِي أَوَّلِهِ فَلْيَقُلْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ فِي أَوَّلِهِ وَآخِرِهِ

10. Filling stomach a third for food, drink, air
عن الْمِقْدَامِ بْنِ مَعْدِيكَرِبَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا مَلَأَ آدَمِيٌّ وِعَاءً شَرًّا مِنْ بَطْنٍ بِحَسْبِ ابْنِ آدَمَ أُكُلَاتٌ يُقِمْنَ صُلْبَهُ فَإِنْ كَانَ لَا مَحَالَةَ فَثُلُثٌ لِطَعَامِهِ وَثُلُثٌ لِشَرَابِهِ وَثُلُثٌ لِنَفَسِهِ
Al-Miqdam ibn Ma’dikarib reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The son of Adam cannot fill a vessel worse than his stomach, as it is enough for him to take a few bites to straighten his back. If he cannot do it, then he may fill it with a third of his food, a third of his drink, and a third of his breath.”Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 2380
11. Reciting prayers after finishing meals
Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever is provided food from Allah, let him say: O Allah, bless us in it and feed us with what is even better. Whoever is provided a drink of milk from Allah, let him say: O Allah, bless us in it and provide us with more.”Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3455
