10 Virtues of Reading Basmalah

1. Bismillah is the opening word of the Al-Quran

Allah Almighty began His most glorious book, the Koran with lafadz basmalah. Similarly, all letters in the Al-Quran begin with basmalah, except Surat At Taubah.

2. Prophet Muhammad SAW once wrote a letter that he sent to kings

To invite the Kings to convert to Islam, and the first word he wrote was basmalah. Like the letter he sent to king heraklius. As we discussed in:

3. Basmalah is the content of a letter sent by Baginda Nabi Sulaiman a.s

Letter to Queen Saba’ who at that time was still worshipping the sun. Allah Almighty tells their story in the Qur’an:

Arabic

قَالَتْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْمَلَأُ إِنِّي أُلْقِيَ إِلَيَّ كِتَابٌ كَرِيمٌ ( 29) إِنَّهُ مِنْ سُلَيْمَانَ وَإِنَّهُ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ ( 30) أَلَّا تَعْلُوا عَلَيَّ وَأْتُونِي مُسْلِمِينَ

English Translation

“The queen said: O ministers, I got a noble letter. The letter is from Solomon, the content: Bismillahir rahmanir rahiim. You shall not be arrogant before me and come to me submissively.” (QS. An-Naml: 29 – 31).

The main intention of the Prophet Solomon to send this letter was to invite the Queen and her people to convert to Islam. Given the virality of this goal, the Prophet Solomon did not forget to start with basmalah.

4. The reading of basmalah becomes the guardian of various forms of worship

Such as ablution, or bathing and tayamum, in the opinion of some scholars. From Abu Hurairah, the Prophet s.a.w said :

Arabic

لَا وُضُوءَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى عَلَيْه

English Translation

“There is no ablution for one who does not say the name of Allah (reading basmalah).” (HR. Abu Dawud)

The context of the hadith above is concerned with the issue of ablution, but the scholars have instructed it to bathe and tayamum, because they are all sanctifying activities.

5. Bismillah for protection from demons and armies when we are eating and traveling.

People who eat or drink by preceding reading the previous basmalah then the devil cannot afford to eat it. From ‘Aisyah radhiyallahu ‘anha, the Messenger of Allah s.a.w said :

Arabic

إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى فَإِنْ نَسِىَ أَنْ يَذْكُرَ اسْمَ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى فِى أَوَّلِهِ فَلْيَقُلْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ

English Translation

“If one of you eats, then let him say the name of Allah Ta’ala. If he forgets to say the name of Allah Ta’ala at the beginning, let him say: “Bismillaahi awwalahu wa aakhirohu (in the name of Allah at the beginning and end)”.” (HR. Tirmidzi)
From Hudzaifah Ibnul Yamani r.a Rasulullah SAW said:

Arabic

إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَيَسْتَحِلُّ الطَّعَامَ الَّذِى لَمْ يُذْكَرِ اسْمُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ

English Translation

“Indeed, satan is allowed to eat food that is not recited by God’s name when he is about to be eaten.” (HR. Abu Dawud)

The Messenger of Allah SAW said, “Whoever comes out of his house reads Bismillah, I pray to Allah, there is no power and strength except with Allah, then it is said to him, “You have been fulfilled and protected” and the sheikh will stay away from him.” (HR. Abu Dawud)

6. Guarding yourself from demonic disturbances while on edge

from Ibn Abbas r.a, that the Prophet s.a.w said :

English Translation

“If one of you (the husband) wants to go to his wife, and he reads the prayer: ‘Bismillah, Allahumma Jannibna Assyaiton Wa Jannibis Syaithon Ma Rozaqtana’, then if Allah reveals (the birth of) the child from them, then the devil will not be able to harm the child forever” (HR. Bukhari no.141 and Muslim no.1434)

7. Bismillah is a barrier between the view of the jinn and the human aurat.

We can’t see the genie, but the genie can see us in all circumstances. Not reluctantly, the brazen genie, will also see when we are not dressed. To overcome this, the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. taught that when taking off clothes, we do not forget to read bismillah.
From Ali ibn Abi Talib r.a, the Prophet s.a.w. said :

Arabic

سَتْرُ مَا بَيْنَ أَعْيُنِ الجِنِّ وَعَوْرَاتِ بَنِي آدَمَ: إِذَا دَخَلَ أَحَدُهُمُ الخَلَاءَ، أَنْ يَقُولَ: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ

English Translation

“The barrier between the jinn’s eyes and the aurat of the house of Adam, when you enter the restroom, say bismillah.” (HR. Tirmidzi).

8. Bismillah is a satanic barrier to opening the place of valuables.

Some precious treasures that we keep at night, will also become the target of demons and their armies. They try to annoy us by soiling food or taking away valuables. In order to solve this problem, the Prophet sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam taught us to close all food, doors, windows by reading basmalah.
The Messenger of Rasulullah s.a.w. said:

English Translation

“Close the vessel, tie the pottery (a place to store water made of leather), close the door, turn off the lantern (firelight), for indeed the devil is unable to open the bound pottery, cannot open the door, nor can it reveal the closed vessel. If thou hast not gained a lid except by crossing over his vessel a branch, and saying the name of God, he should do.” (HR. Muslim)

9. Bismillah is able to block demons from staying in the house

The reading of basmalah if we say when we are about to enter the house, will be a barrier for demons to enter it or stay in it.
From the Companions of Jabir bin Abdillah r.a, Prophet Muhammad s.a.w said :

English Translation

“If a man enters his house and he remembers the name of God when he enters and when eating, then the devil will shout: ‘There is no place to stay for you and no dinner.’ But if he does not remember God when he enters then satan says, ‘You get a place to stay’ and if he does not remember God’s name when eating then satan invites his friend, ‘You get a ration of stay and dinner’.” (HR. Muslim).

10. Bismillah is an absolute requirement for the halal of slaughter animals

Among the blessings of basmalah, the one who slaughters animals by calling basmalah, his slaughter animal can be kosher. On the contrary, the person who slaughters the animal without uttering basmalah, either intentionally or forgetting, the slaughter is void, and the animal should not be eaten. God said:

Arabic

وَلَا تَأْكُلُوا مِمَّا لَمْ يُذْكَرِ اسْمُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَإِنَّهُ لَفِسْقٌ

English Translation

“You shall not eat (animals) that are not named by God when slaughtering them. It’s something ungodly (not kosher).” (QS. Al An’am : 121).
