What Is Repent

The word tawbah(repentance) itself comes from the Arabic letters ta, wawu and ba’ which indicates the meaning of returning (al-ruju’) and returning (al-audah). The meaning of taubat to Allah Almighty is to return to Him, return to His day and stand at the door of His heaven. It can also be said that taubat is to return and surrender to Allah Almighty the Most Forgiving and All-Merciful.

Arabic

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ الَّذِي لاَ إِلَهَ إلاَّ هُوَ الحَيُّ القَيّوُمُ وأَتُوبُ إِلَيهِ

Transliteration

“Astaghfirullaah alladhee laa ilaaha illaa huwal hayyul qayyoomu wa atoobu ilayhi”

English Translation

I seek the forgiveness of Allah the Mighty, Whom there is none worthy of worship except Him, the Living, the Eternal, and I repent to Him, 

Hadith About Tawbah

  • Al-Nu’man ibn Bashir reported: I asked Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, about His saying, “Repent to Allah with sincere repentance,” (66:8). Umar said, “It is a servant who repents from a sin and never commits it again.”Source: Tafsīr al-Ṭabarī 23/107
  • Musa ibn Abi Habib reported: Ali ibn Husayn, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “Verily, repentance is only by action and turning away from the matter. Repentance is not by speech alone.”Source: al-Tawbah li-Ibn Abī al-Dunyā 57
  • ‘Imran ibn Husayn reported: A woman of Juhaynah came to the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while she was pregnant from adultery. She said, “O Prophet of Allah, I have committed a legal offense, so impose it upon me.” The Prophet called for her guardian and he said, “Be kind to her and when she gives birth, bring her to me.” He did so and the Prophet ordered for her shroud to be wrapped over her, then her ordered her to be stoned and he prayed over her. Umar said, “Do you prayer over one who committed adultery?” The Prophet said, “She had repented with such repentance that, if it had been divided between seventy people of Medina, it would have reached beyond them. Have you found any repentance better than this, that she gave up her life for Allah Almighty?”Source: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1696
