Hadith About the Obligation to study
Arabic
طَلَبُ الْعِلْمِ فَرِيْضَةٌ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ وَمُسْلِمَةٍ
Transliteration
Thalabul ‘ilmi fariidhatun ‘alaa kulli muslimin wa muslimatin
English Translation
“Seeking knowledge is mandatory for every Muslim male as well as female.” (HR Al-Baihaqi)
Arabic
تَعَلَّمُوْاوَعَلِّمُوْاوَتَوَاضَعُوْالِمُعَلِّمِيْكُمْ وَلَيَلَوْا لِمُعَلِّمِيْكُمْ (رَواهُ الطَّبْرَانِيْ)
Transliteration
Ta’lamuu wa ‘allimuu wa tawaa dha’uu limu’allimiikum wa layalau limu’allimiikum
English Translation
“Learn ye all, and teach ye all, and honor your teachers, and do good to those who teach you.” (HR. Tabrani)
Duas Before Learning
Arabic
رَضِتُ بِااللهِ رَبَا وَبِالْاِسْلاَمِ دِيْنَا وَبِمُحَمَّدٍ نَبِيَا وَرَسُوْلاَ رَبِّ زِدْ نِيْ عِلْمًـاوَرْزُقْنِـيْ فَهْمًـا
Transliteration
Rodhitu billahirobba wabil islaamidiina wa bimuhammadin nabiyyaw warasulla robbi zidnii ‘ilmaan warzuqnii fahmaa.
English Translation
“We know Allah Swt as my God, Islam as my religion, and Prophet Muhammad as Prophet and Messenger, O Allah add to me knowledge and give me a good understanding”
Arabic
رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا وَارْزُقْنِيْ فَهْمًا وَاجْعَلْنِيْ مِنَ الصَّالِحِيْنَ
Transliteration
Robbi zidnii ‘ilman warzuqnii fahmaa, waj’alnii minash-shoolihiin
English Translation
“O Allah, add me knowledge and give me the joy of understanding And make me belong to the class of shaleh”
Arabic
اَللّٰهُمَّ اخْرِجْنَا مِنْ ظُلُمَاتِ الْوَهْمِ وَاَكْرِمْنَا بِنُوْرِالْفَهْمِ وَافْتَحْ عَلَيْنَا بِمَعْرِفَتِكَوَسَهِّلْ لَنَآ اَبْوَابَ فَضْلِكَ يَآ اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ
Transliteration
Allahumma akhrijnaa min dzulumaatil wahmi wa akrimnaa binuuril fahmi waftah ‘alainaa bima’rifatika wa sahhil lanaa abwaaba fadhlika yaa arhamar raahimiin
English Translation
“O Allah, get us out of the darkness of prejudice glorify us with the light of understanding, open the understanding of knowledge to us and open to us the doors of your grace, O most merciful Dzat.”

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّى اِسْتَوْدِعُكَ مَاعَلَّمْتَنِيْهِ فَارْدُدْهُ اِلَىَّ عِنْدَ حَاجَتِىْ وَلاَ تَنْسَنِيْهِ يَارَبَّ الْعَالَمِيْنَ
Transliteration
Allaahumma innii istaudi’uka maa ‘allamtaniihi fardud-hu ilayya ‘inda haajatii wa laa tansaniihi yaa robbal ‘aalamiin
English Translation
“O God, verily I entrust to Thee what thou hast taught me, and return him to me when I need it. Thou shalt not make me forget him, O Lord the preserver of nature.”
Arabic
اَللّٰهُمَّ أَرِنَا الْحَقَّ حَقًّا وَارْزُقْنَا اتِّـبَاعَهُ وَأَرِنَا الْبَاطِلَ بَاطِلاً وَارْزُقْنَا اجْتِنَابَهُ
Transliteration
Allahumma Arinal Haqqa Haqqaw Warzuqnat tibaa’ah. Wa Arinal baathila BaaThilaw Warzuqnaj tinaabahu
English Translation
O God, show us the truth, so that we may follow it. And show us ugliness so we can stay away from it”
Arabic
رَبَّنَا انْفَعْنَا بِمَاعَلَمْتَنَا الَّذِيْ يَنْفَعُنَا وَزِدْنَا عِلْمًا وَالْحَمْدُلِلّٰهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ
Transliteration
Rabbanan fa’naa bimaa ‘alamtanal ladzii yanfa’una wa zidnaa ‘ilman walhamdulillahi ‘alaa kulli haalin
English Translation
“O our Lord, make our knowledge a useful knowledge, teach us anything that is beneficial to us and add knowledge to us, all praise only to God in every circumstance.”
