About Surah Al-Kafirun
Surah Al-Kafirun is the 109th surah in the Quran and belongs to the Makkiyah surah group because it was handed down in the city of Mecca. The name Al Kafirun (Arabic: الكافرون) is taken from the part of the first verse of this surah. It is called Al-Kafirun because this letter deals with the appeal to the infidels. Al-Kafirun means infidels.

In this surah, Allah directed the Messenger of Allah to speak to the infidels and tell them that he would not worship the idols they worshipped. Surah Al’Worship is another name for him. For this surah declares that only Allah SWT is to be worshiped, and that the infidels’ idols will not be worshiped. Surah Al Munabadzah and Muqasyqasyah are two more names for the same surah. Because its content heals and eliminates the sickness of destruction, it is called Muqasyqasyah or Muqasyqisyah (healer).
Asbabun Nuzul Surah Al-Kafirun
- Ibn Katsir explained asbabun nuzul Surat Al Kafirun in his interpretation. That the infidels of Quraysh once invited the Messenger of Allaah sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam to worship their idols for one year, and then they would worship Allah for one year. So Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala sent down this letter.
- In his book Tafsir Fi Zilalil Quran, Sayyis Qutb explains that the Arabs do not deny Allah’s existence. They fellowshiped Him because they didn’t understand His essence. They worshipped idols depicting shalihs, or angels who interceded to bring them closer to God. Angels are considered daughters of God by them. When Allah’s Messenger indicted tawhid, or worshiping only Allah, they were taken aback. They also fought proselytizing in a variety of ways. They offered property and office after failing to stop the Messenger of Allah by injuring him. They chose the path of compromise after those attempts failed as well. Offer cooperation by worshiping their God together for a year and then worshiping Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala the following year. As a response, Allah sent down Surah Al Kafirun.

Being the differentiator between Islam and infidels
A distinction between Islam and unbelievers is made in Surah Al-Kafirun. The verse demonstrates that what Muslims worship, follow, and adhere to are not the same as what Muslims believe. Both they and Muslims are ineligible to be Muslims. As a result, this verse serves as a distinguishing factor between Muslims and non-Muslims.
Surah Al-Kafirun Hadith
- Abdullah ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The chapter, ‘Say: He is Allah the One,’ (112:1) is equal to one-third of the Quran. The chapter, ‘Say: O unbelievers,’ (109:1) is equal to one-fourth of the Quran.” Ibn Umar said, “The Prophet would recite either of them in his two cycles before dawn prayer.” Source: al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr 13319
